Hurricane Preparedness

Category 1 Hurricane
1. Landfall Winds 74 to 95 MPH.
2. Hurricane Storm Tide 4.5 Feet Above Mean Sea Level.
3. Damage Potential – Minimal to Moderate.

Who Must Evacuate:
1. All barrier islands.
2. All mobile homes.
3. All areas know by residents to be subject to severe flooding as a result of intense rainfall.
4. All occupied land area within the perimeter of the Hoover Dyke.

Category II or III Hurricane:
1. Landfall Winds 96 to 130 MPH.
2. Hurricane Storm Tide to 8 Feet Above Mean Sea Level.
3. Damage Potential – Major

Who Must Evacuate:
1. All Hurricane Category 1 areas.
2. All areas east of Bush Road north of an eastern extension of Toney Penna Drive.
3. All areas within one block of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway north of Northlake Blvd.
4. Between Northlake Blvd. and the Boca Raton City limits, all areas within one block of Lake Worth or the Intracoastal Waterway.

Category IV or V Hurricane:
1. Landfall Winds 131 to Above 155 MPH.
2. Hurricane Storm Tide to 11.67 Feet Above Mean Sea Level.
3. Damage Potential – Extreme to Catastrophic.

Who Must Evacuate:
1. All Hurricane Category 1,II and III areas.
2. All areas east of Limestone Creek Road north of Indiantown Road.
3. All areas east of Bush Road north of Toney Penna Drive.
4. All areas east of Maplewood Drive north of Indian Creek Parkway extended to Alt. A1A.
5. All areas east of Alt. A1A north of Frederick Small Road.
6. All areas within tow blocks of Lake Worth or the Intracoastal Waterway between Frederick Small Road and the Boca Raton city limits.

Flood Hazard:
A flood can occur when tropical storms, hurricanes or other heavy rainstorms are apparent. The flood hazard areas in the Palm Beach County are: along the coastal ride, Hagan and Clair Ranch tracts, Loxahatchee Wildlife Preserve, J W Corbitt Preserve, surrounding Lake Okeechobee, and inland bodies of water.

Flood Warning Systems:
Palm Beach County depends on the National Weather Service (NWS) for flood recognition. The NWS will issue a flood advisory for Palm Beach County at least six hours before expected rainfall would overflow drainage systems and cause the isolation of structures by the inland ponding of flood waters. Stay tuned to local TV or radio stations known to have an active new bureau. When flood warnings are issued, it will be done first through the Emergency Alert System, then if needed, by sirens and loudspeakers form police and fire vehicles that will give evacuation routes.
